The Labyrinth has begun.................... AGAIN !!
We are looking for some Volunteers on Saturday 14th May from 9.30am-1.30pm (Note time change to usual) to help spread the Top Soil that is being delivered on Friday. There will be a fair bit to shift but many hands make light work so we are grateful to all who can spare an hour or so and help us get the job done so we can get onto to seeding it. Your efforts will not go un-rewarded in that we will have the Village Green “pop up kitchen” providing Drinks throughout the session and our usual offering of homemade soup, bread & cakes for around lunchtime. Rakes & gloves are being provided by our friends & co-workers at WMDC, but do feel free to bring your own if you choose. Due to the excellent turn out last week and some plucky volunteers, I can confirm the first meeting of the Newmillerdam WI will be on Tuesday 19th April starting at 7.30pm at the Methodist Centre. All are welcome to come and decide whether they wish to join the group. As a new group we will require a name put your thinking caps on or check out the WI website for some ideas and bring your suggestions to the meeting. Look forward to seeing you there. And we are looking for some Volunteers on Saturday 5th March from 10am – 2pm to help in a variety of ways……….. hopefully there will be something of interest to you all Spreading Top Soil – before we begin designing the Labyrinth we need to prepare the ground for seeding which means spreading 250 tonnes of top soil, which is being delivered on Saturday 5th. * Any time from 10am – 2pm, with a Hot Soup Lunch served from 12 Noon - in the Village Green Pop Up Kitchen Sturdy Footwear & gloves helpful, Rakes provided by WMDC or Bring your own Controlling Ash Sapling Growth – in order to maintain the Village Green we need to remove twice a year the wild sown Ash Saplings that pop up anywhere and everywhere – so help is needed here * Anytime from 10am – 2pm, with a Hot Soup Lunch served from 12 Noon in the Village Green Pop Up Kitchen Gloves & secauteurs, loppers provided by WMDC or bring your own Building Bird Boxes – ready for the busy nesting season Andrew McGuinness will be helping our young folk to make some Bird Boxes which you can then take home and erect in your own garden or alternatively have them installed on the Village Green. * Anytime from 1-2pm. After much waiting, we are pleased to announce that on Monday 8th February, the diggers will be moving onto the Green and beginning the initial preparatory works on the Village Green labyrinth project. Please do come along on the 8th if you are able as we hope to begin a timeline series of photos from the beginning to completion of the project. As soon as we have any accurate on the day timings we will get them posted on website.
Saturday 5th March - Volunteers are encouraged to gather on the Green at the site of the labyrinth anytime from 10am, to help spread the topsoil which needs to be prepared for grass seed sowing a key part of the projects success. If you are looking for something less energetic then we will also be doing our usual clearing of invasive ash saplings, and for those with young families our Countryside Ranger, Mr Andrew McGuinness will also be showing how to make a Bird box, to be hung either on the village green or back home in your on garden. All of these events will of course be sandwiched between Homemade Soup & Cakes under the protection of our Event Shelter Kitchen. In June, we hope to organise another Wildflower Walk, hosted by Andrew McGuinness, who will spend approx 2 hours walking the Green and introducing us to the flora and fauna around us that we may not always be aware of. Our Annual Bat Walk event is scheduled for August and later in September we will be holding our annual Hay Raking event on the Village Green.
